Engaging Alumni Early: Career Readiness Panel

The state’s flagship university, University of South Dakota provides a small-college feel for their 7,500 undergraduate and 2,500 graduate students. The Alumni Association and USD Foundation provide engagement and connection opportunities to over 70,000 alumni through hosting events like athletic watch parties, networking gatherings, providing career and professional development resources, and coordinated giving efforts.

About the Event

Creating engaged and connected alumni starts with ensuring they feel those supportive connections BEFORE they leave their educational pursuits at the institution. USD provides live and on-demand virtual experiences for their university community of students, staff, faculty and alumni in a dedicated platform on Conduit to give easy-to-access and easy-to-organize opportunities to stay informed and involved.

Alissa Matt, Associate Director of Alumni Engagement, USD Foundation moderated a virtual career readiness panel of young alumni for an audience of current USD students. Alumni shared with the audience how they transitioned from student to “the real world” by answering questions about resources available, how to make decisions on what to do next, what they would do differently if they could talk to their Senior year selves, and more. Their paths after USD ranged from the NFL to graduate school and provided not only a variety of insights for attendees, but a unified way for these alumni to give back to their alma mater in serving on the panel. 


The USD Foundation and 4 recent alumni were live on Conduit and utilized the social streaming tools to broadcast on Facebook Live as well. The attendee-level reporting from Conduit provided insight into the 35 students who used QTokens to access the platform and who interacted with the various other resource links and on-demand videos on their community pages. 

Life beyond USD is a journey- there will be good times, there will be challenges. USD is teaching students valuable skills and competencies by providing clear access to resources to set them off on the right foot, and using their branded Conduit platform to build the reach of their alumni community and maximize their staff’s engagement efforts.
